buy the car as a status/ego purchase. We see this all the time when so many 350Z owners don't have much of a clue, if any, about the Z car heritage. Z32's were no different, only in the 90's SUV went from being a vehicle used with an actual purpose, to a vehicle bought as a status/ego purchase, and were in the same price range as sportscars. There's only so many car buyers out there in the 30-40k range, and when you take away that huge demographic, something has got to give. These cars didn't simply price themselves out of existence, their prices left them in a demographic that they couldn't compete in. Corvettes still sold strong because they do not rely on "dumb" buyers who buy sportscars for the status symbol, same with Porsche. Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota have never had that type of customer base, so their sportscars floundered.
